Dulce Allen sets out her top tips on linking language learning with science teaching. The secondary curriculum, requiring more ‘real’ topics, is moving our language learning closer to CLIL. Dulce’s advice covers all of CLIL’s key aspects, and seeing a lesson at her school shows how well students keep their level of science, and, with scaffolding support, use French happily.

Dulce Allen has been Head of Science at Bordesley Green Girls’ School, Birmingham since 2011. She started teaching science in French to Year 7 pupils as part of the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) programme. Her team was awarded the 2016 TES Science Team of the Year Award, in part due to the contribution of the CLIL programme to the science team’s success. The school holds an annual Teaching Education Conference, where visitors can see CLIL in action as well as attend workshops to create CLIL schemes of work and learn how to introduce CLIL into their schools.
