Publications - Journals

The Association publishes a range of journals. These are part of the membership package for individuals but they can be supplied to libraries and teaching institutions through an annual subscription. All journals contain a variety of articles which will be of interest to school teachers, teacher-trainers, advisors and inspectors, business language trainers and those working in further and adult education.

Language Learning Journal (LLJ) provides a forum for scholarly contributions on current aspects of foreign language and teaching. LLJ is an international, peer-reviewed journal that is intended for an international readership, including foreign language teachers, language teacher educators, researchers and policy makers. Contributions, in English, tend to assume a certain range of target languages. These are usually, but not exclusively, the languages of mainland Europe and ‘Community Languages'; other languages, including English as a foreign language, may also be appropriate, where the discussion is sufficiently generalisable.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS
The Language Learning Journal welcomes contributions which focus upon major issues influencing the foreign language teaching profession. Articles, which should have a bearing, directly or indirectly, on classroom practice, will draw on theoretical, conceptual and empirical developments in foreign languages and adjoining disciplines in the UK and beyond.

Instructions for authors

The Editorial Committees welcome previously unpublished articles, reports and other contributions which will further the cause of the learning and teaching of the language concerned. All articles are refereed in order to ensure quality and authors are offered constructive feedback in order to meet the required standards. Potential contributors are encouraged to enquire informally about material they are considering for submission, and the editors are always willing to read drafts and discuss them.

Presentation
Contributions normally fall into one of the following categories, however contributions of different lengths will also be considered:
(a) Articles or reports of between 3000 and 4000 words.
(b) Brief (up to 1000 words) items of information, notes on innovative practice,
discussion points (including those arising from previous articles).

Articles may be written in the target language or English and may deal with any aspect of contemporary language, literature and culture. Previously unpublished classroom material (for example, a worksheet) may accompany the contribution and is particularly welcome.

Articles should be typed with double spacing and have only one title. The use of short sub-titles to divide the article is encouraged.

If you quote references or sources, full details should be given using the Harvard system, e.g.: Barber, C. (1993) The English Language: a historical introduction, Cambridge: CUP. In the text the author’s name, year of publication and page number where relevant should be quoted in brackets, e.g.: (Barber, 1993: 27).

All artwork (material that is not textual) such as tables, figures, diagrams, charts, graphs, illustrations, appendices and photos should be in black and white or shades of grey. Photos which accompany articles should be submitted in JPEG or PDF formats.

Submission
Articles should be saved in MSWord and submitted electronically to the Editors:
Language Learning Journal – Norbert Pachler and Douglas Allford
Francophonie – Shirley Lawes
Deutsch: Lehren und Lernen – Uta Smail
Vida Hispánica – Richard Littlejohns and Mark Payne
Tuttitalia – Sonia Cunico
Rusistika – Margaret Tejerizo

Submission deadlines
In order to be considered for inclusion in the following issue, articles should normally be sent in by 1st April and 1st September, although shorter deadlines are possible by negotiation with the Editors. You are invited to contact the Editors if you would like guidance on any contribution.

Copyright
Authors are requested to seek copyright permission for any material they use from external sources before submitting their article and should discuss this, if it arises, with the Editors. If the article is accepted into the journal, copyright ownership will be transferred to ALL (although all other copyrighted sources will be acknowledged). Authors must sign a copyright form and return the original to the editors before the article is published.
