Submitting a contribution to the Language Zones

Language ZonesALL is currently looking for authors to contribute content to the Language Zones; reviewers to review a variety of language teaching resources; and peer reviewers to share their professional expertise in helping colleagues to improve their submissions.

ALL welcomes previously unpublished articles and reports from readers and by all those interested in learning and teaching languages at any level in the UK and beyond. We are particularly pleased to receive contributions from members of ALL and from new authors. The target audience of the Language Zones consists first and foremost of busy practising teachers across all educational sectors.

Articles should not normally exceed 3000 words, although longer contributions may be considered for publication in instalments. Contributions may be written in English or in the target language. Authors are encouraged to contact the editor of the Language Zone (see below) to discuss their planned contribution before it is written. Editors will be pleased to advise on the viability of a topic, on presentation and on timescales for publication. They are also willing to read drafts and offer constructive comments.

Contributors should bear in mind the general policy of the Language Zones on presentation. Material published in the Language Zones should be expressed in accessible language, free of jargon other than that familiar to language teachers, and not abstruse or excessively theoretical. Contributions should be academically rigorous and must maintain high standards of accuracy in quotations and references. They must be consistent in their presentation, and adhere to the Language Zones Style Guide.

If you quote references or sources, full details should be given using the Harvard system,

e.g.: Barber, C. (1993) The English Language: a historical introduction. Cambridge: CUP.

In the text the author’s name, year of publication and page number where relevant should be quoted in brackets, e.g.: (Barber, 1993: 27). Previously unpublished classroom material (for example, a worksheet) may accompany the contribution and is particularly welcome.

Wherever possible, contributions should be accompanied by one or two images as illustrations. They should normally be in JPEG form and should be supplied as separate files. Screenshots may be included, but only if they will be clearly legible when reproduced online. An abstract should be included with each article submitted, although it will not necessarily be published with the contribution.

Authors are requested to seek copyright permission for any material they use from external sources before submitting their article and should discuss copyright issues, if they arise, with the editor of the Language Zone concerned. All copyrighted sources will be formally acknowledged. If an article is accepted for publication in the Language Zone, copyright ownership will pass to ALL, but reasonable requests from authors to republish their article elsewhere or to quote from it will not normally be declined.

Contributions should be saved in MS Word and submitted electronically by email to the relevant editor. Please include an email address for correspondence, and any accompanying graphics as separate files (with, if relevant, graphics also embedded in the word file in the correct place).

All contributions, once submitted, are sent to an independent referee or referees for review. Authors should not assume that their contribution will be published, even if an editor has invited them to submit it, until it has been approved by a referee. Feedback from referees will be passed on to authors. Urgent or especially topical contributions may sometimes be published immediately. However, in order to preserve a balance of content, the date of publication of each contribution, once accepted, will be at the discretion of the editor.
