‘We get to read our favourite stories in new ways.’

Using a collaborative approach between a University and a Primary School to design a Primary Languages Curriculum focusing on using familiar texts.

Language learning can be used to support and strengthen literacy skills in learners’ first language.  Approaching texts from the perspective of a different language can also be another route to fostering successfully an enjoyment of reading.  In this session, we will hear how incorporating familiar texts into the languages curriculum has proved to be successful in a London primary school.

Since June 2018, Susi Sahmland, Senior Lecturer in Educational Studies, and Claire Hackney, Lead for Languages and KS2 teacher at a Primary School in Brockley, have worked together in what has proved to be a successful collaboration and partnership between a London Primary School and a university.

In their presentation, Susi and Claire will share their thinking behind their collaboration and how the teaching of languages can be transformed across the whole-school primary curriculum when teachers and researchers collaborate to make space for creativity and stories.

This informal talk will include practical examples as well ideas for curriculum design, and opportunities to pose questions to the guest speakers.

Claire, a Year Four teacher, is the lead for languages in a Primary School in Brockley and she won the German Teacher of the Year Award in 2020.  Susi, Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, leads the Primary Languages course on the PGCE programme.
