Framework for National Recovery in Language Learning

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages (APPG) has today released a new Manifesto for Languages, to make the case for improving the linguistic skills base of the UK.

The APPG Manifesto is supported by a host of businesses, universities and language education bodies including the Association for Language Learning. According to the Manifesto:

“the latest cutting-edge research shows that, in the 21st century, speaking only English is as much of a disadvantage as speaking no English. Knowledge of other languages – and of other cultures – is important for education and skills, the economy, international engagement, defence and security and community relations. The 2015 General Election provides an ideal opportunity to make some milestone commitments – for the short, medium and long term – to making a step change in the UK’s national capacity in modern languages.”

The APPG is therefore calling for all political parties to support a new Framework for National Recovery in Language Learning in their 2015 General Election manifestos, which commits them to:

  • Changing the reputation of UK citizens as poor linguists,
  • Providing high quality language learning for all children throughout the UK from age 7 onwards,
  • Aiming for every child to have a language qualification by the end of secondary school,
  • Encouraging business and employers to get involved in tackling the crisis, and
  • Maintaining and developing UK expertise at Higher Education level.

This new Framework for National Recovery in Language Learning is supported by over 100 businesses and organisations including the Association for Language Learning.
