According to the latest figures, published Tuesday 21st November 2012, more than 70% of new trainee teachers have obtained a ‘high-quality’ degree, which is the highest recorded statistic to date.
The Teaching Agency published data reveals that 71% of graduates who aspire to teach in the classroom have achieved a 2:1 or higher in their degrees – this is a record 6% increase on the number from last year. Additionally, more men than ever are training to become primary school teachers, and even 900 graduates this academic year are recorded as starting training as physics teachers. Physics, as well as maths, chemistry and modern foreign languages have in previous years been considered subjects which have been traditionally hard to recruit to.
The data all in all suggests that the quality of trainee teachers has improved, especially in all the key English Baccalaureate subjects.
