The Links into Languages LinkedUp Award Scheme has produced a series of free resources for teachers of primary, secondary, and post-16 languages. From CLIL to transition and from alternative accreditation to progression, these materials have been created and tested by groups of practising teachers and others working with languages. The LinkedUp Award Scheme aims to tackle the challenges we are facing and make a difference to teachers and learners, with the emphasis on innovation and creativity. Funded projects cover all ages from 4 to 19, a wide range of different languages and ten themes which reflect national priorities for language learning. Find out more about the Award Scheme.

LinkedUp ‘CLIL (content and language integrated learning)’ projects have developed processes and learning activities to teach a language through one or more other subjects of the curriculum. Teachers have worked with subject colleagues to devise units of learning focused on a subject or cross-curricular theme. There are a plethora of great projects using this theme, including:

Water water everywhere…

This project developed resources to enrich French teaching in the primary classroom. Materials incorporated more sophisticated language and curriculum content as the children get older. Links are made to most areas of the curriculum for most age groups, and all the ideas can easily be adapted for mixed-age classes and to aid differentiation.

Short CLIL modules for secondary pupils were planned and taught by trainee teachers (CLIL MA students) from Leipzig University, in collaboration with their mentors in six host schools, with observers from Reading and Oxford Brooks Universities. The subjects covered were Maths, Science, Citizenship and Music. The project incorporated CLIL training elements for mentors.

The Evolution of Language Learning through Science
http://www.linksintolanguages.ac.uk/resources/2276
In this project language and science teachers collaborated to put together a unit of work for students to learn science through French and/or German. This motivated students, promoted active learning and developed teachers’ expertise as curriculum leaders.
