The Scottish Government has announced their commitment to language learning by expressing their commitment to the European Union 1 + 2 model, which aims to “create the conditions in which every child will learn two languages in addition to their own mother tongue”.
This initiative will take place over the course of two Parliaments and will “create a new model of language acquisition in Scotland". Language learning is seen as essential for the Curriculum of Excellence, and a priority: providing new and exciting opportunities for language learners to make language education more engaging and stimulating for pupils.
The Languages Commitment intends to develop the teaching of languages and improve learners’ engagement with and achievement in languages. It endeavors to develop public understanding and awareness of languages in relation to the big issues in today’s society but also in terms of career options.
Scottish Ministers have welcomed the Language Learning in Scotland: A 1+2 Approach report and are considering its 35 recommendations, but concede that these steps will require extensive discussion, collaboration and partnership with local authorities, schools and parents.
