Knights of the European Grail

Knights of the European Grail is a project co-financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ programme. It brings together organisations across six different countries (Italy, Portugal, Spain, Germany, France and UK) to create an app for game-based language learning.

Knights of the European Grail is a three year project developing a game-based approach for learning Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, French and English. The project aims to develop, test and create an application to help children aged between 12 and 17 years old learn these languages from A1 through to A2 CEFR levels for use and engagement to students both in and outside of language lessons.

The game is an adventure game based in the Middle Ages. It will include elements of Virtual
Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to help create an innovative and engaging
language learning gaming experience. The players will interact online with characters and master challenges to help them progress through the game enabling development of their language skills too.

The game will be testing linguistic skills from reading and listening as well as comprehension and grammar. Currently the game is under development, but here is a sneak peak at some of the graphics that have been created so far.

We will be sharing updates and developments through our social media channels, Languages Today and in ALLNet.

Educational Materials

If you are a teacher or an institution looking to play the game in a test session, please write an e-mail to [email protected]

You will receive access to the project Twinspace platform below where we will collect ideas on how to use the app in different learning environments (e.g. classroom, at home). Essentially, it's a place where you can make use of the ideas and game sessions that other teachers have already designed.

Quick Start Guide for Players and Teachers

This game is only playable on mobile devices and it is supported on both Apple (iOS) and Android. We recommend playing on a tablet if you have the option.

In this point and click adventure game, you will explore medieval Europe as our two protagonists, Richard and Artemisia.

The objective of the game is to allow the player to learn while being able to explore and interact with characters, scenes and objects. The game follows a storyline and both protagonists have to work together in order to achieve their goal. Players will have choices when talking to other characters which can influence the outcome of the conversation.

  • There are language learning mini-games in the game which will test the player on certain aspects. These games are used in situations where different outcomes are possible, e.g. if you need information from another character.
  1. The word slashing mini-game uses relevant A1/A2 level vocabulary that is sometimes used in the game to test the player's knowledge. These mini-games serve as challenges at certain points of the game and players will have to complete them in order to advance the storyline.

How it works: There will be a context word at the top of the screen and groups of words will be thrown on the screen. The player then has to slash the word that fits the context word above in order to achieve a certain score.

  • Players can try the mini-games as often as they want. This also goes for conversations with other characters for instance, e.g. you need to pick the correct option to get what you want. The correct dialogue choice might be something like being polite to another character.

Therefore this game does not have a "Game over" screen, and it promotes explorative language learning in a safe environment, since players have an unlimited amount of attempts to complete challenges and scenes.
