Teaching boys

Girls have, for some years, out-performed boys in their GCSE results. I wanted to find out why and whether there was anything that could be done to help boys learn more effectively. Do girls and boys learn differently, and do they have different needs when they are learning a language? These are questions my student teachers, their mentors in schools and I have asked over many years. In order to discover the answers to these questions I undertook some research with teachers in a number of classrooms in different parts of the country. We wanted to find strategies which would motivate boys, in particular, to try to redress the balance. These are the two resulting books:
