It includes articles and resources for teachers, aspiring teachers, and learners of Japanese alike – plus details of upcoming events, and guidance for setting up Japanese as a class or club at your school. The Zone is free for all to use!

Curriculum Guidance
Japan Foundation Standard for Japanese Language Education
A framework for Japanese teachers to consider how Japanese proficiency can be both taught and assessed. Levels are equivalent to those of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and focus on two main competencies: competency in using language to complete specific tasks, and competency in intercultural understanding and respect. Developed by the Japan Foundation for use in different educational contexts around the world.

Implementation
One-off sessions: Japanese Taster for Schools (JTS) Programme
Experience Japanese in your classroom! JTS volunteers carry out school visits across the UK to introduce students at any level to the Japanese language. Via one-off Japanese taster lessons, schools not currently teaching Japanese can find out what it is like. You can also register to be a volunteer for JTS yourself, with training sessions provided.

Japanese Clubs from Scratch Project
An online, free training programme for teachers, giving guidance on how to establish a Japanese language club in their school (primary or secondary) with specialised materials. No Japanese experience is required!

Japanese Local Project Support Programme
Institutions can apply for up to £2,500 for non-profit-making projects which promote Japanese language education in the UK. These can include introducing Japanese into the curriculum, supporting GCSE/A-Level courses, setting up new Japanese clubs, and establishing links between schools and higher education institutions. Applications usually open twice a year, in spring and autumn.
Minna no Kyozai – collaborative resource website
A website for Japanese teachers to create and share teaching materials for students. Collaborate with colleagues from around the world by using the forum, read teaching advice, and download a variety of resources: Link here
Japan Video Topics website
A collection of short videos (all around 4 minutes long) which introduce various unique topics about Japan, including culture, food, technology, and nature. Watch here
Hirogaru Nihongo
Website with videos and articles written in simple Japanese for learners. Topics are themed around various hobbies such as tea, the outdoors, sweets, music, calligraphy, manga and more. Watch here
Festivals & Seasonal Celebrations
In Japan, there are many festivals and seasonal celebrations, from January all the way to the end of the year.

NIHONGO e-na Portal for Learning Japanese

A scheme of work for teaching Japanese at KS2, comprising of 10 lessons (45 minutes each). Every lesson is clearly structured, with comprehensive teachers' notes, National Curriculum guidelines and a set of accompanying Culture Notes: Link here

JaLaChamp UK 2025 Finals Day 10/05/2025
In May 2025 the Japan Foundation held the Finals Day for the annual Japanese Language Championship for Young Learners UK – a.k.a. JaLaChamp! Primary and secondary school students wowed the judges and audience alike with their speeches and videos, all in Japanese.

Rakugo and Kobanashi: Enjoy Storytelling and Explore Japanese (08/11/2024 – 10/11/204)
In November 2024, the Japan Foundation held a series of events on Japanese one-man storytelling (Rakugo and Kobanashi) in London and Oxford. JLPT information
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is an internationally recognised exam for non-native speakers of Japanese, which evaluates and certifies their Japanese-Language proficiency. The test takes place twice a year (July and December) in Japan and various locations around the world. Please check the test centre locations on these pages:

JaLaChamp 2026 – Japanese Language Championship for Young Learners UK
The theme for this year’s JaLaChamp is ‘My/Our Favourite Sandwiches’ – primary and secondary school students studying Japanese can submit speeches and videos on this theme for the chance to win fantastic prizes! Registration ends 3rd March 2026 for the Speech Category and 10th March 2026 for the Video Category, with finals taking place 20th June 2026 in London. UCL-Japan Youth Challenge
The UCL-Japan Youth Challenge is an annual summer school programme for UK sixth form students and Japanese high school students, promoting cultural interaction through events themed around contemporary social issues. The Challenge also gives students the chance to attend university-style lectures from leading academics and is a great introduction to some of the world’s top higher education institutions. Held at University College London and the University of Cambridge since 2015, this summer’s programme will run from Saturday 25th July to Sunday 2nd August 2026: Click here

Japan Foundation
The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 by special legislation from the Japanese Diet. It became an Independent Administrative Institution in 2003, with the aim to promote international cultural exchange between Japan and the rest of the world and provide financial support for a range of international cultural exchange programmes.
