Background: Several documents have emerged recently around the roles and uses of Artificial Intelligence in Education, as well as issues that arise. This Briefing includes general issues.
In June 2025 DfE published these Policy papers: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education, Using AI in education settings: support materials and (via The Education Hub) AI in schools and colleges: what you need to know The Education Hub is ‘a site for parents, pupils, education professionals and the media that captures all you need to know about the education system.’
Key messages: The Policy paper: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education has sections on
- What is generative AI
- Opportunities and challenges for the education sector
- Using AI safely and effectively
- Using AI responsibly
- The future for generative AI in education
Using AI in education settings: support materials contain 4 modules of training resources for teachers (not subject-specific) and a module for leaders. The materials balance the need for staff and student safety with the opportunities AI creates. They feature:
- activity focused slides
- video presentations with accompanying transcripts
- summaries of the information presented
- activities to consolidate knowledge, such as multiple-choice questions
- templates to help you reflect and plan
The Chartered College of Teaching have also provided additional materials including:
- a free online journal on AI
- a range of case studies demonstrating how schools and colleges are using AI safely and effectively
- a free multiple-choice assessment providing Chartered College certification based on the training materials
